North Hymettus – Ridge Traverse

On Sunday, 18 October 2026, we explore northern Mount Hymettus on a circular hike that brings together natural scenery, history and expansive views. Join us for an autumn outing on one of Attica’s most distinctive mountains.

Our route begins at the Monastery of Agios Ioannis Kynigos and follows trails that climb gradually, with views towards Athens along the way.

We pass the Bat Cave and head towards Korakovouni (692 m), where the landscape begins to open up.

We then continue along the northern ridge of Mount Hymettus, one of the most distinctive parts of the route. Walking through open terrain, we can take in the mountain’s contours and the changing landscape around us.

Following the ridge together, we make our way towards Korakas Peak (728 m). There, the “Megalos Koukos” landmark stands out against the landscape, and we will take our main break.

The summit offers panoramic views. When visibility allows, we may see Euboea to the east, as well as Mount Parnitha and Mount Penteli to the north.

We return by a different trail, passing the Lion’s Cave before arriving back at the monastery and completing our circular hike.
