Mount Parnon Hiking: Malevi Monastery – Agios Petros | Wanderlust
On Sunday, September 27, 2026, we travel to Mount Parnon for a unique Level A hiking traverse, from the historic Malevi Monastery to the traditional village of Agios Petros in Kynouria, through dense forests, the distinctive Syrian juniper forest and constantly changing landscapes, in collaboration with Our Vibe is Mountains, who live and are permanently based in the area.

An easy Level A hiking experience in the heart of Mount Parnon, combining rich natural scenery, a unique forest ecosystem and the authentic mountain landscapes of Arcadia.
Our day begins at the historic Malevi Monastery, one of the most distinctive landmarks of northern Parnon. From there, we gradually enter the mountain’s forest landscape, following a beautiful route with Agios Petros in Kynouria as our final destination.
Fir trees, black pine, dense vegetation and the distinctive Syrian juniper forest create an ever-changing natural setting. The route gives us the opportunity to discover a different side of Mount Parnon, away from the more crowded mountain destinations.
🔶 From Malevi Monastery to Agios Petros
A hiking traverse that takes us from a historic monastery through the forests of Mount Parnon and ends in one of the most characteristic mountain villages of Kynouria.
Malevi Monastery is located in a particularly rich natural environment on the slopes of Mount Parnon and is one of the most important monasteries in the region.
Our hike begins at Malevi and continues through a landscape dominated by forest. Along the route, we encounter different types of vegetation and pass through the wider area of the protected Syrian juniper forest, one of Mount Parnon’s most distinctive natural features.
Our final destination is Agios Petros in Kynouria, a traditional mountain village built on the slopes of Mount Parnon, with stone houses, a picturesque village square and a strong Arcadian character.
🔶 The Syrian Juniper Forest of Mount Parnon
One of the elements that makes this hike particularly special is the unique natural environment surrounding Malevi Monastery.
The area is home to the Syrian juniper (Juniperus drupacea), an impressive species of juniper that can grow to the size of a tree. Its presence creates a distinctive forest landscape and adds significant natural interest to the hiking experience.
Together with fir trees and black pine, it forms a rich mosaic of vegetation and one of the most fascinating forest environments in the eastern Peloponnese.

Our hike ends in a traditional mountain village that preserves strong elements of the region’s history and architecture.
Agios Petros lies on the northern slopes of Mount Parnon and is one of the characteristic villages of mountainous Kynouria. Its stone-built houses, traditional village square and the historic Trikalitis Tower are among its most distinctive landmarks.
After the hike, we will have time to relax in the village and enjoy a meal together before beginning our journey back to Athens.
