Railway Path & Asopos Gorge
On Sunday 29/9 we will hike the railway path and cross the beautiful Asopou gorge which is the natural border between the mountains of Oitis and Kallidromou.
Our route starts from the small church of the Holy Church of Zoodochos Pigi just outside the village of Iraklia.
Our course at the beginning is uphill on a dirt road and after walking for about 30 minutes, we will come across a sign informing us of the start of the trail. The trail ride takes on a special interest as we move along the path once used by railroaders, and the views are fantastic.
At the time when the railway line K. Tithoreas - Lianokladi was built (end of the 19th century) and specifically the section between Asopos and Trachina stations, the transport of materials and workers was done with animals and a special path had to be built, parallel to the line.
Its name is preserved to this day as "Railroad Path".
In the next few minutes we also see the first tunnel in a panoramic view, while we will soon cross a tunnel that was opened to facilitate the work.
Then our movement is parallel to the train tracks and the route offers wonderful images, until the old railway station of Asopos, where is the end of the path. From there, passing on the opposite side, we will descend towards the gorge of Asopos which is the natural border between the mountains of Oitis and Kallidromou.
It is a separate piece of special natural beauty, a narrow passage, formed by the towering vertical mountain slopes of Oita and Kallidromos. A gorge, which leads the waters of Eastern Oita to the Sperchios River and through it to the Malia Gulf, creating a wetland of enormous ecological importance.
The canyon in some places becomes quite narrow giving the typical wild beauty of the canyons and it has been known since ancient times.
At the exit, on the fringes of Oita and Kallidromos on the South-Eastern side of the Sperchios valley, was the ancient Heraklia (Trachina), which was one of the five cities in the Kingdom of Achilles.
After the hike we will visit Kammena Vourla where we will have free time for lunch.
Participants should be in good physical condition and have taken part in hiking before. You will need sports shoes which will get wet during our crossing of the gorge. Whoever owns an amphibious, wear this.
