Hiking Valtetsiniko - Lagkadia

 On Sunday 1/12 we will hike in beautiful Arcadia from Valtetsiniko to Lagadia! It is the 8th section of the menalon trail.

Valtesiniko is built at an altitude of 1,150 meters on a slope of the northern Mainalos and is one of the most mountainous settlements of Arcadia and the Peloponnese. It has been declared a traditional settlement.

Lagkadia, the "hanging village of the Peloponnese", as it has been called since ancient times, is a natural and architectural masterpiece.

Built on a steep slope-face of Mainalos amidst rich green vegetation, it seems to hang over the wild gorge formed by the Lagadian river or Tuthoa river according to Pausanias.

From the square in Valtesiniko, we pass by the impressive stone-built school and come out to the upper peripheral of the village, a position with an open view of all the northern basins.

We gain height from a path and a concrete road up to 1250 m, where we find a good path that runs through the top where the Castle of Valtesinikos nestles.

In open landscapes with a nice view, we again lose a little height until the church of Agia Triada.

The next part of the route crosses a large fir forest by a series of man-made paths.

After a short detour to the spring in Grias to Lithari, we will gain some height to descend again near Krya Vrysi, a large spring where there is also a guest house-restaurant (usually closed).

From here we will climb gently up to a saddle and asphalt. A small forest road will help us to cross a wooded ridge and reach the Elatakos site.

We enter through an open gate to the large Grilas meadow, where fields of walnut trees, threshing floors and huts.

At the western end of this zone we will see the Laggadia and descend towards them with maneuvers, following the smoother basins.

After a small spring we reach a dirt road and leave it to pass under the impressive complex of water mills Rapi.

We now enter Lagkadia and end up at the fallen hero by a combination of cobblestones.

Lunch will follow in a local tavern. Those who wish to have a Vegan option should mention it as a comment during registration.
