Hiking to Baroutospilia,Parnassos Mt

On Sunday 10/11 we will hike and visit the Barutospilia on Parnassos Mountain, one of the largest caves in Greece whose impressive stone basins cause the admiration of visitors.

Our movement in the first 800 m is on a dirt road and ends in a clearing.

From there begins the path that is uphill and moves on the right side of the Kakorema gorge.

Half of the route is covered by oak trees, which as we climb higher give way to the huge and imposing rock formations.

This beautiful route ends at the famous Barutospilia cave, one of the largest caves in Greece. Hikers arriving at the cave are rewarded by the amazing view of the heights of Parnassos mountain and the plain.

Passing its huge entrance, the impressive stone basins that look like small pools, the elaborate formations of stalagmites, but also the enormous size of the cave's interior, cause the admiration of visitors.

Barutospilia is one of the most impressive caves of Parnassos and at the same time one of the most spacious caves in Greece. Both the overall dimensions and the configuration of the rooms, as well as the imposing decoration of the walls make up a very interesting geography.

During the years of the Greek Revolution, inside the cave, fighters made gunpowder to face the enemy, which is why it got the name Baroutospilia (Gunpowder cave, in Greek).

Lunch will follow in a local tavern, which will also have Vegan options.

Participants should be in moderate physical condition, with no recent injury.
