Hiking in Delphi-Kirra Ancient Trail
On Sunday, 27th of October’24, we will hike in the ancient path of Delphi-Kirras on a route that it is connected the port of Kirras with the Oracle of Delphi, where it combines the beauty of the natural landscape and the sanctity of the area!
Delphi, with its important oracle that was functioned in ancient times, was also an independent destination for hikers, as it is known for the ancient pilgrims' path from Kirra to Delphi, which is part of the European path E4.
The course we will follow will be reversed and will start from Delphi at 550m altitude near the archaeological site.
For the first two kilometers our route is downhill in a south-west direction and the view is truly magnificent looking at the endless olive groves and on our right hand the peak of Giona, the pyramid.
We reach the canal of Mornos where here we can see the natural flow that the water follows starting from the artificial lake of Mornos to Attica covering a total distance of 188 km.
In the next 800 meters we will approach the chapel of St. Charalambous, where it offers ample views of the famous and ancient olive grove of Amfissa as well as the sea area of Itea.
Leaving the chapel behind, we reach the village of Chrissos, amphitheatrically built at the foot of Parnassos, at an altitude of 200 meters, and the name of the village is a corruption of Krissa, the ancient Phocian city that existed there in the Mycenaean era.
Then we will continue our downhill course reaching the Byzantine church of St.George and the beautiful almond grove.
Our downhill slope will end after 1 km and we will have the opportunity to cool off at the stone-built fountain.
The last kilometers of the route are on a road between centuries-old olive groves which will lead us to the port of Kirra, which was one of the two most important ports for religious tourism in antiquity.
The route is ideal for beginners and children.
After the end of the hike we will go to Itea where we will have free time for food and a walk.
