Ano Doliana: Hiking through the Colours of Mount Parnon

On Sunday, November 15, 2026, we discover the autumn beauty of Ano Doliana through an atmospheric hike on the slopes of Mount Parnon. We follow forest trails and sections of the European long-distance path E4, surrounded by chestnut, oak, walnut and other deciduous trees, in a landscape filled with golden, amber and reddish colours.

🔶 The route

Our hiking route is linear and follows the European long-distance path E4 for a large part of the way. We walk along peaceful forest passages on the slopes of Mount Parnon, surrounded by chestnut, oak, walnut, apple and other deciduous trees.

As we continue, the scenery constantly changes. Dense vegetation, impressive tree trunks and trails covered with fallen leaves create one of the most characteristic autumn landscapes of mountainous Arcadia.

The hike finishes in Ano Doliana, a traditional village built on the slopes of Mount Parnon. There, we will have time to explore its picturesque alleys, stone-built houses and historical landmarks.

🔶 Ano Doliana and its history

Ano Doliana is associated with one of the significant battles fought during the first months of the Greek War of Independence. On May 18, 1821, Nikitas Stamatelopoulos and his men confronted a much larger Ottoman force at Doliana and achieved an important victory. Following this victorious battle, Nikitaras earned his famous nickname “Tourkofagos”.

The historic Christofilis House, known as “Nikitaras’ Stronghold”, is still preserved in the village. Nikitaras and his fellow fighters used the building as a defensive position during the battle. Today, it houses the Historical and Ethnographic Museum of Doliana, preserving the memory of the battle and the local history of the area.
